GrammarPlagiarism

Grammar editors like Grammarly and Ginger are gaining enormous popularity nowadays. New writers, students and professionals use Grammar editors to correct their silly writing mistakes and to build their workflow efficiency. There are many students and teachers who prefer to use Grammarly as their freehand assistant to detect plagiarism and write better assignments. Writers and Professionals use it on a daily basis to improve their productivity. But it has disadvantages (just like any other software out there). It is not perfect. We looked into some alternatives to Grammarly which are free and give it a fair competition. Thanks, Samira for covering Grammarly review in the previous post.

I base all alternatives to Grammarly discussed here upon two services provided by it. We will review each option and see how it performs against Grammarly. Some of them are already addressed in the post we wrote a year ago about Free grammar checkers. However, almost all the following software tools mentioned below are different and carefully curated as the substitutes of Grammarly.

Services Offered by Grammarly

  • Grammar checking and proofreading service

Grammarly, with its basic version, offers proofreading and automated grammar checking. It checks for grammatical mistakes, formatting and spelling errors along with you write anything.

  • Plagiarism Detection Service

Grammarly also offers plagiarism detection against billions of web pages, documents, books, and journals available on the internet. This feature can be handy for bloggers, students, and professional writers.

  • Human proofreading

From the recent update on their application, I came to know about their social proofreading service (costs $0.05 per word) which can be useful for new writers.

Grammarly Alternatives as a Plagiarism Checker

Grammarly does provide plagiarism detection feature. It detects billions of digital materials spread around the Internet. Moreover, it checks the ProQuest database to check research papers and essays submitted from different students for efficient checks.

Similar tools including Grammarly plagiarism checker are available, but only a handful of them are good enough.

PlagiarismCheckerX

Plagiarism Checker X or PlagiarismcheckerX is a great tool to avoid plagiarism in papers and academic work. It is specially designed to keep students and researchers in mind. It provides multiple features useful for them. For example, bulk paper upload, side-by-side comparison, and interesting reports. It can be the perfect alternative if you mainly use Grammarly for plagiarism checking.

ProWritingAid Plagiarism Checker

Visit Website: https://prowritingaid.com

As mentioned earlier, PWA or Pro Writing Aid also has a plagiarism checking ability which writers can take benefit of. ProWritingAid can detect similarity from the web. Since the software is not using any other APIs to access university database, students should use it properly. As ProWritingAid can be easily integrated with Scrivener, it can be a good choice for writers and professionals.

Copyscape

Website: http://copyscape.com

Copyscape is another widely popular plagiarism detection service. It is also powerful enough to detect online plagiarism like Grammarly. Copyscape comes with API interface which can be used by the developers. However, it is free for the first 500 words.

SmallSEOTools

Website: https://smallseotools.com

SST or SmallSEOTools is one of the first tools comes on Google while searching for plagiarism checker other than Grammarly. Even though Google can itself be used as a plagiarism checker, It can be way more organized to use a tool which uses search engine APIs to show plagiarism. This technique can be useful to detect direct plagiarism in work. It also claims to not store any data in their servers which is another good reason to use it. Unfortunately, it is free software and hence unable to detect other forms of plagiarism.

Bottom Line for Similar Tools Like Grammarly – Comparision

Grammarly is an excellent tool. The only point it lacks from its rivals is the high pricing. Even though you can get Grammarly for $11 per month for an annual plan, it is still costly for some people. I think ProWritingAid or LanguageTool can be the great alternatives to it. Also, using Grammarly just as a plagiarism checker is not a compelling choice. Plagiarism Checker X or Turnitin (if you can get authentic access) are the best substitutes other than Grammarly.
